Makerbot just came out with a stepper extruder... but, alas, it's not easily compatible with Gen3 electronics... http://store.makerbot.com/stepstruder-mk6-upgrade.html I'm kinda dissapointed with MBI, since, I'd love a stepper extruder, but it seems that I'd need a set of Gen4 electronics, and being a college student, I don't have the funds for that at the moment... Unfortunately, Gen4 + Stepstruder upgrade comes out to close to $500... which is way out of my price range. I'll probably upgrade at some point, but it's really too bad that the 3000 cupcake cnc owners out there are being left in the dust!

  1. It's totally possible to use this on a Cupcake with Gen3 electronics. I'm doing it with MakerBot #131.

I'm working on a how-to page on the wiki:

  2. Great tutorial, and most of that looks great, but the little bit about updating the EC firmware is way over my head... I'll probably still get the kit once I have the money, but i'll probably have to have one of my CS major friends help with the code stuff...

  3. Actually, I'd recommend the MakerGear stepper plastruder for the cupcake. I have one, and It's really fantastic. Cheaper that the MBI one for sure. Also, the software is quite easy. Change two line in the firmware, download with Arduino IDE, start printing. Your prints look quite good for a DC extruder, though. Keep up the good work!

I always love hearing new ideas! Post here if you have some, but beware, posts that seem like spam probably won't get past moderation.
